ZESCO Launches Net Metering Program to Boost Renewable Energy Adoption.

Published on 29 July 2024

ZZESCO Limited announces the launch of the Net Metering Program, set to begin on 1st August 2024. This is in line with The Electricity (Net Metering) Regulations, 2024, and is designed to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources among our customers, allowing them to generate their own electricity and feed any excess power back into the grid. Net metering is a system that allows prosumers (consumers who also produce electricity) to generate their own power (limited to the contracted/declared demand with ZESCO) from renewable energy sources such as solar. Any excess electricity generated can be fed back into the ZESCO grid, effectively allowing prosumers to offset their electricity bills. This system not only promotes the use of renewable energy but also enhances energy security and sustainability in Zambia.

Net Metering Framework

To ensure smooth integration, a comprehensive framework has been established that includes several key components. First, a nominal administrative fee for application processing and assessments will be charged, as approved by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) at the time of application submission. Additionally, the Prosumer will be responsible for bearing the cost of the meter. Following the payment and approval process, the Prosumer will then sign both the Net Metering Supply Agreement (NMSA) and the Net Metering Connection Agreement (NMCA).

Benefits of Net Metering

Net metering offers several benefits, including cost savings by allowing you to generate your own electricity and receive credits for excess power, reduced greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energy, increased energy independence by lessening reliance on traditional power sources, and economic growth by creating jobs in renewable energy installation and maintenance.
However, if there is a change of ownership of a property with a renewable energy system, the existing net metering account will be closed. The new owner must then apply for a standard electricity account and can subsequently apply for a new net metering account.
To ensure a high quality of supply, prospective prosumers should use Grid-Tied Inverters, and for a complete list of recommended equipment or detailed technical specifications, they should visit the ZESCO website.
